Uncharted 4? A Last of Us sequel? Are Jak & Daxter making a comeback?
During the Sony Gamescom conference you should of noticed that Sony revealed Naughty Dog had an unannounced title in development for Playstation 4. Big news. While being pretty obvious that this was taking place it was nice to finally hear something official about such a hugely anticipated game.
Exactly what this title is though is unknown. There are many theories and rumours flying around the Internet so we thought we would take a look at them.
Probably the most obvious title to bring to the Playstation 4. For a franchise known for its stunning visuals and seamless gameplay, Naughty Dog would do well to showcase their talents first on the Playstation 4 with another blockbuster title from the Uncharted series. Considering what the company made graphically possible with the previous titles within this series on the Playstation 3, I’m very excited to see what they can do they the power of the Playstation 4. Naughty Dog have already stated that the current engine used on Uncharted and The Last of Us will be used for PS4 so it’s pretty certain whatever they bring to the table will be very pleasing to the eye.
Uncharted was released on November 16th 2007, Uncharted 2 on October 13th 2009 and Uncharted 3 on 1st November 2011. Seems that Naughty Dog pin a 2 year life cycle on titles within the franchise, whilst announcing the next game in the series normally within a year. We have heard no word from the studio as to whether Uncharted 4 exists and from previous trends we would of expected to know by now. A couple of explanations for this could be due to The Last of Us being in development or perhaps Sony requested Naughty Dog keep quiet about UC4 until they announced the Playstation 4 as it may just be a “next gen” title.
One eagle eyed fan did spot something in the works in the background of a shot during one of The Last of Us development diary videos. A Pirate figure was spotted, which was definitely not part of any Uncharted 3 DLC and was no where to be seen in The Last of Us. Maybe Uncharted 4 will be set before Nathan Drake was born and focusing more on his ancestor Sir Francis Drake. Following him on his journeys around the world, of course don’t forget the treasure hunting and the inevitable sprinkling of a love story.
The Last of Us Sequel.
As much as I would love to see this, I’m not done with the first instalment. It’s far too early to even think about a sequel when Naughty Dog haven’t even released any DLC for The Last of Us. If the 2 team spilt at the Naughty Dog camp is still in effect then I’m pretty sure thats what 1 half of the team are dedicated too. Supposedly we may see a continuation of the story from where we left off within that DLC and probably more multiplayer maps and modes. I think we are more likely to see a prequel, and an insight into just what happened within those 20 years that the infection grew and turned the world into the dark infestation we played through.
Jak & Daxter
Originally stated to be only a trilogy could we see Jak & Daxter 4? I’m not so sure. In the recent “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit a few people asked about plans for another game within the series.
Neil Druckman replied:
“No plans. We gave it a shot at the beginning of the project and couldn’t make it work for ourselves.” and ”We tried and failed. Maybe in the future we’ll try again.”
So it seems that the company did toy around with the idea of bringing the franchise back at some point, only to stall and struggle to get any further than a concept.
Although not owned by Naughty Dog anymore, maybe a next generation visit to the world of Crash Bandicoot is in order. Currently owned by Activision we haven’t seen a Crash release on a console since 2008 with “Crash – Mind over Mutant”. Two titles “Crash Team Racing 2010“, and “Crash Landed” were in development in 2010 but sadly they were cancelled. Come on Activision, team up with Naughty Dog and unleash a next generation Crash title. It’s been too long since the Aku Aku mask protected me.
A new IP
It would be great to see a completely new franchise from the studio. Maybe an Open World game or an RPG? I’m going to leave this open to you people. Let us know what you think could be Naughty Dogs new IP in the comments below.
Lets be honest though, anything that Naughty Dog releases is pretty much gonna have me in ore. The company are extremely talented and they sure know what they are doing. The hype that they built around “The Last of Us” was intense. I remember the first glimpse I saw of the game. It was a video of an Ant growing fungus out from its head, I was hooked. As more content was slowly teased over the internet I became addicted, and I’m sure I am not the only one. Between the 18 months that I caught my first glimpse of The Last of Us until release day, well and today as I love the game, my fascination hasn’t stopped growing for the title. It’s with this that I think whatever Naughty Dog have up their very tight sleeves, will be slowly introduced to us. It’s all about hype. That famous saying “Don’t believe the hype” doesn’t hold any ground when Naughty Dog are concerned, I’m hyped already and I haven’t even seen what they have to offer but I know it will blow us away.
