After publishing the top 5 selling Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games we thought we would check out a different top 5 selling games for different consoles, thus leading us to the top 5 selling Playstation games.
The total number of sales tops an estimated 43,000,000 copies sold between the 5 games, an astonishing figure considering how many pirated games were readily available to play on ‘chipped’ consoles. The Playstation went head to head with the Nintendo 64 after Sega’s fifth generation console, the Sega Saturn was left to sink into darkness.
The game features intelligent drivers to compete agaisnt the player in single player. There are two modes to choose from: Arcade Mode and Gran Turismo Mode (Simulation Mode in North America). Arcade Mode allows players to choose the vehicle and racetracks with unlockable vehicles and racetracks
awarded to the player for winning races. Gran Turismo Mode is built around a level up theory – A player must progress through the game to upgrade their driver’s license in order to play different racetracks, to collect credits and special cars and to also collect trophies. Credits won within Gran Turismo Mode can be used to purchase tuning upgrades for vehicles.
The game features 140 highly detailed vehicles with 11 different racetracks that are again highly detailed and a near digital replication of the real racetrack.
GT2 is an uprated model of the original featuring the same aspects that everybody fell in love with. Arcade Mode and Gran Turismo Mode are still the two playable modes within the game, with the same driver’s license progression process required in Gran Turismo Mode.
The graphics and gameplay stay close to GT1′s aswell, although players cannot qualify for races in this version. The major difference between GT2 and GT1 is the amount of unlockable vehicles and racetracks. 650 different cars along with 27 racetracks including some rally stages were added to the game, a major increase from the 140 vehicles and 11 racetracks as featured in GT1, giving players a massive variety of cars to choose from.
FF7 follows Cloud Strife, who joins a rebel organisation called AVALANCHE in the aiding of riding the world of Shinra, an electric power company draining the worlds resources. Along his jounrney he befriends allies to help take on a bigger problem – Sephiroth.
Sephiroth is the main villian in FF7, who was injected with cells from Jenova, an extraterrestrial lifeform by Shinra when he was still a fetus. Sephiroth believes he must follow his destiny and become God, but Cloud is there to stop him.
The gameplay is a combat based RPG in which upon battling against CPU enimies is turn based. Players must level up Cloud and his allies to progress through the game and defeat harder foe.
Tomb Raider II is a heavily modified version of the original title, with different locations and levels, many more weapons and the ability to save at any point, unlike the first. Character movement was also developed to include the ability to climb ladders and perform mid-air rolls.
One if the biggest expansions was to Lara Croft’s manor. Croft Manor was designed as a tutorial area to let players who had never played Tomb Raider to get acustom to the controls and skills. Various traps and jumps were set on Croft Manor’s land, while a gymnastics area and swimming pool were added inside the manor. A butler had also been added to the manor who would follow you around with a tray laden with cups. If you were to bump into him he would grunt and groan and occasionally fart (break wind). A favourite of all players would be to lock the butler in the freezer to save him getting in your way or just for the fun of it.
Based upon the book, the story line follows Harry Potter in his new magical life at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he makes friends and begins his magical training. Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione must stop Lord Voldemort from returning to power (although they do not know Professor Quirell is entwined with You-Know-Who).
The gameplay is based on a third person shooter, with the camera always showing the whole of Harry within the game and a cross hair to aim his wand. Spells are used to move objects and shoot enimies, while learning new spells from teachers throughout the game. The graphics and gameplay all in all is very simple like most children’s film based games.
