What is the OUYA?
So you may have heard of it, you might not. But what is the OUYA?
The OUYA is a new open source console, reportedly stated for release on June 4th 2013. Open source means that the console will allow any developers, big or small, to make games and apps for it. Developers kits are free and come with every console and enable the user to develop games and apps without the need for licensing fees, however all games will be required to have some kind of free-to-play aspect.
What about specs? OUYA comes packed with Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and 1 GB ram, and 8 GB of internal storage, (expandable via USB). Wifi and ethernet enabled, the console will download games and stream videos and music via apps in full 1080p HD. The company behind the OUYA also invite you to unscrew the console, with only a standard screwdriver, and take a look inside, if that takes your fancy. This will enable easy modding and possible hardware add ons.
The OUYA will run its own version of the Android operating system, and will feature an exclusive OUYA store for applications and games specifically designed this platform. On release the unit is expected to run a modified version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and be open to rooting without voiding the warranty.
Taking a look at the controller, its interesting to see that it also features a touchpad on the front of the controller, like Sony’s Dualshock 4. We think it looks like a mix between the Xbox 360 controller, and the dual shock 4. Perhaps the best of both worlds? The face buttons are labeled O,U,Y,A, reading clockwise starting from the bottom. The analogue sticks have the same positioning as the Xbox 360′s controller as well as the d-pad, so Playstation fans are gonna have to get used to this if they decide to purchase the OUYA. Theres 2 triggers on each side for each hand, probably used for the usual aiming and firing functions in games. Finally you’ll find a single button on the front face in-between the d-pad and right analogue stick. We are guessing this is a start/select type button. You will be able to connect 4 controllers to you OUYA.
On to games, All games will be free to try, meaning that you can literally try any game before you buy it, and only those you fall deeply in love with, do you have to part with your hard earned cash for. A vast library of titles have been promised from shooters and action adventures to RPGs and puzzles. These games will be download only, so you dont have to worry about even leaving the house to get them.
Besides games OUYA will be able to bring all your usual apps to your big screen. The company have already partnered with Twitch.TV, Crunchyroll, iheartradio, TuneIn, XBMC, Plex, and Flixster, and also report more are being added to the list daily.
So what is the OUYA? Hopefully now you know. This exciting new bit of tech really could change the gaming market, forever. We are extremely excited to get our hands on an OUYA, and as soon as we do, we will let you know what we think.
